SEAN'S CORNER
Golf Course Overseeding News

In this months Veranda, there is an article in "Inside the Grass" that is a must read as it announces the decision to skip overseeding fairways on Ocean Winds this fall.

Some of the things that you must know about the overseeding decision follow:

Not overseeding provides:
- Improved health and quality of the dominant stand of bermudagrass
- A substantial decrease in weeds, especially Poa Annua
- Elimination of transition problems from bermudagrass to rye and back to bermudagrass again in the spring
- Less disruption of play and poor playing conditions during seed establishment
- Less water and chemical, and fertilizer use on the course
- Quicker green up in the spring and early summer of the bermudagrass

The disadvantages to not overseeding are:
- Poorer quality turf conditions in late winter and early spring compared to overseeded turf
- More wear of the dormant turf due to cart traffic
- Less consistency in the turf canopy
- More Cart Path Only pressure due to less ability to soak up rains

The practice of non overseeding is a favored practice in the turf industry, promoted by the USGA and the educational industry in general. We will still overseed Crooked Oaks as normal, tees, greens and fairways, so the opportunity to play on overseeded fairways will still be available.

Check out the full article in the Veranda.

2009 Men's Member-Guest Invitational
The Men's Member-Guest will be held Thursday, October 1st through Saturday, October 3rd with a practice round and cocktail party planned on Wednesday. A great sense of excitement surrounds our 2009 event as it will be our first in our great new facilities.
The field has been expanded to 84 teams and is open to all Seabrook Island Club members. Due to a couple recent cancellations, we need 2 more teams to fill the field. If you or anyone you know is considering playing, now's the time to enter. Click here for an entry form and if you're interested in playing, please complete and return it as soon as possible to secure your place in this historic event.

The Blitz
Join us Wednesday afternoons at 3 pm for a quick and casual 9 holes of golf. You may partner with the General Manager, the Head Golf Professional, the Director of Golf Course Maintenance or any number of other members of the club staff.

Each player contributes $12 to the prize pool, plus carts, and we play a Captain's Choice Scramble. Please sign up by noon the day of play.

Adult Clinics
Every Tuesday, from 9:30 - 10:30, the professional staff gives a short game clinic on pitching, chipping, putting, and bunker play. One week, we focus on chipping and putting. The next week, we focus on pitching and bunker. So, if you are beginner or just need a tune-up on the short game, call the Pro Shop, 768-2529, to sign up. The cost is $15.

On Thursday's, from 9:30- 10:30, the professional staff give a 1 hour clinic devoted to the full swing. This is a great way for you and your guests to get quality instruction prior to playing or just to hone your skills. Whatever your playing level, the full swing clinic can aid your swing development. The cost is $15.00

Junior Clinics
Every Wednesday and Friday at noon, the professional staff gives the juniors an opportunity to learn a bit about the golf swing and the game of golf.
